![]() by Patsy A Clarke (University of Natal, Durban) and Johannes C Cronjé (University of Pretoria) ABSTRACT The possibilities which the internet presents for cognitive learning are endless. The ease with which communication can take place over distance, makes one wonder how effective a tool it is for a constructivist teaching style, combined with cooperative learning, in a distance learning environment. Following a pilot study in 1996, a second course was presented to nine students following a tutored Masters’ Degree course in Computer-Assisted Education at the University of Pretoria. The aim of the research was to determine to what extent the WWW could be used as a “virtual classroom” with an electronic mail listserver being used as a parallel discussion forum. To this end a "virtual classroom" was created with "virtual posters", "virtual desks" and "virtual portfolios". Students’ messages were analyzed to consider their response to such a method of classroom delivery. ![]() California's institutions of higher education welcome you to the California Virtual Campus Website.
