Article on the Internet Teaching: Experience from South Africa
by Patsy A Clarke (University of Natal, Durban) and Johannes C Cronjé (University of Pretoria)

The possibilities which the internet presents for cognitive learning are endless. The ease with which communication can take place over distance, makes one wonder how effective a tool it is for a constructivist teaching style, combined with cooperative learning, in a distance learning environment.
Following a pilot study in 1996, a second course was presented to nine students following a tutored Masters’ Degree course in Computer-Assisted Education at the University of Pretoria.
The aim of the research was to determine to what extent the WWW could be used as a “virtual classroom” with an electronic mail listserver being used as a parallel discussion forum.
To this end a "virtual classroom" was created with "virtual posters", "virtual desks" and "virtual portfolios". Students’ messages were analyzed to consider their response to such a method of classroom delivery.
